July 2015 Fine Art Auction Preview
Rachel Littlewood has a good look at the many interesting lots on offer in the upcoming
two day Fine Art Auction that is being held on 14th/15th July 2015 in the West Country
Saleroom Complex in Exeter.
A Hermes Lady's 18ct White Gold and Diamond Mounted 'Cape Cod' Wristwatch (FS27/166)
offered in our Two Day Fine Art Sale starting on 14th July 2015 at our salerooms
in Exeter, Devon.
Day One of the
Quarterly Fine Art Action on Tuesday, 14th July 2015
starts off with the
silver
being offered. Amongst the highlights is an
Elizabeth II silver Dubarry pattern flatware service
(FS27/39), contained in a mahogany canteen, which carries a pre-sale estimate of
£1,400-£1,600; an
Edward VII silver cased ticket timepiece
(FS27/53), maker Charles S Green & Co Ltd, Birmingham, 1904 estimated at £400-£500
and a
19th Century silver and coral mounted rattle
(FS27/60a), which is expected to fetch £400-£500. Within the same section an
Exeter silver trefid spoon
(FS27/131) struck one to the bowl interior and weighing 1.46ozs has an estimate
of £500-£600 and a pair of
George IV silver coasters
(FS27/133) maker WS possibly William Schofield, London 1823 is inviting bids of
£600-£800.
An Elizabeth II Silver Dubarry Pattern Flatware Service (FS27/39) is amongst the
silver being offered during the two day sale, which will have online bidding facilities.
Edward VII Silver Cased Ticket Timepiece (FS27/53) by Charles S Green & Co Ltd
of Birmingham dating to 1904 is inviting bids of £400-£500.
A 19th Century Silver and Coral Mounted Rattle (FS27/60a) will be on offer at our
West Country Saleroom Complex on 14th July 2015.
An Exeter Silver Trefid Spoon (FS27/131) has local interest being auctioned in the
city in which it was originally crafted in 1673.
This pair of George IV Silver Coasters (FS27/133) was made in London in 1823 and
is inviting offers of £600-£800.
Watches and jewellery
are next under the hammer, with a good broad selection of items in this auction.
A
gentleman's Breitling gold plated 'Navitimer' wristwatch
(FS27/162) is expected to fetch between £1,500-£2,000 and a gentleman's Rolex Oyster Perpetual
wristwatch
(FS27/165) has an estimate of £1,300-£1,500. Also within the watches is a stunning
Hermes lady's 18ct white gold and diamond mounted Cape Cod
wristwatch
(FS27/166). With a square mother of pearl dial with Arabic numerals surrounded by
brilliant cut diamonds, this cased wristwatch is likely to fetch between £9,000-£10,000.
A
Larry diamond mounted eternity ring
(FS27/259) is expected to create interest with an estimate of £1,800–£2,200, whilst
a diamond mounted three stone ring
(FS27/260) with central round old brilliant cut stone, estimated to weigh 1.45ct
is estimated at £5,000-£6,000.
A Breitling Gentleman's Gold Plated 'Navitimer' Wristwatch (FS27/162) carries a
pre-sale estimate of £1,500-£1,800.
A Gentleman's 'Rolex Oyster Perpetual' Wristwatch (FS27/165) is expected to fetch
£1,300-£1,500.
A Larry Diamond Mounted Eternity Ring (FS27/259) is in the fine jewellery auction
of the sale.
This Diamond Mounted Three-stone Ring (FS27/260) is estimated at £5,000-£6,000.
The last section of the sale on Tuesday is the
paintings.
A
screen print and collage entitled Spirals
(FS27/286) by
Sir Terry Frost (1915–2003), which
is signed and numbered 109/125 in pencil carries an estimate of £600-£800 and a
brightly coloured acrylic and aerosol on linen canvas
(FS27/291), by
John Plumb (1927–2008),
which is untitled has an estimate of £1,000-£1,500.
Of a more traditional nature is the
portrait of a young lady, head and shoulders by Edouard Vienot (b 1804)
(FS27/354). The young lady is wearing a white dress adorned with a rose. This oil
on canvas is being offered with an estimate of £1,000-£1,500.
Also an oil on panel by
Nicholas Condy (1793–1857)
of
figures in a country cottage kitchen
(FS27/383) is expected to create interest with an estimate of £2,000-£3,000 and
an oil on canvas by
Frank Moss Bennett (1874–1933)
entitled
Their Valued Opinion
(FS27/384) depicting gentlemen in a salon interior critically engaging a portrait
painting carries an estimate of £8,000-£12,000.

John Plumb (1927-2008) - Untitled (FS27/291).
Figures in A Country Cottage Kitchen with a Woman Preparing Fish, a Seated Man and
a Dog at the Fireside (FS27/383) by the artist Nicholas Condy (1793-1857) is estimated
at £2,000-£3,000.
Frank Moss Bennett (1874-1933) - 'Their Valued Opinion' carries a pre-sale
estimate of £8,000-£12,000.
Day Two of the auction to be held on Wednesday, 15th July 2015 starts with the
Oriental and European ceramics and glass.
A pair of
Chinese faux bamboo vases
(FS27/420) of cylindrical form have an estimate of £600-£800, whilst a pair of
Canton porcelain vases
(FS27/422) carry a pre-sale estimate of £500-£700. An
English dated delftware plate
(FS27/432) painted in blue with a Chinese vase of flowers on a table and inscribed
Ann Pearson Born 17th May 1732 has an estimate of £600-£800 and a pair
of
Royal Doulton vases by
Hannah Barlow
(FS27/454) have an estimate of £600-£700.
Also within this section is a pair of
Worcester First Period porcelain sauceboats
(FS27/465). The exteriors are painted in the Little Fisherman pattern. Dating from
circa 1765, they are estimated at £400-£500.
A pair of Chinese Faux Bamboo Vases (FS27/420) is offered in the ceramics auction
with a pre-sale estimate of £600-£800.
A pair of Canton Porcelain Vases (FS27/422) that is expected to realise £500-£700.
An English Dated Delftware Plate (FS27/432) inscribed 'Ann Pearson Born 17th May
1732'.
A pair of Royal Doulton Stoneware Vases by Hannah Barlow (FS27/454) is inviting
bids of £600 and £700.
The
works of art
section, as always has some interesting and unusual lots on offer.
An
early 20th century games compendium
(FS27/502) containing a Staunton style chess set, draughts pieces, die, canisters
containing gaming counters, dominoes, card press and folding chess board is expected
to fetch between £500 - £700 whilst a 17th century stumpwork picture
(FS27/512) with a central oval panel of robed female figures, enclosed by birds,
animals, insects, flowers and foliage is expected to fetch £800-£1,200.
A
Chinese silver inlaid bronze censer
(FS27/522) with inlaid two character mark has an estimate of £800-£1,200 and a
Chinese Mandarin's Court amber and jadeite necklace
(FS27/539), probably late Qing dynasty, has an estimate of £1,500-£2,000.
Also within this section is a
rare Indian mother of pearl and stone casket dating
from the 17th century
(FS27/612), which is inviting bids of £2,500-£3,500. A
mahogany bracket clock
(FS27/663) by
James McCabe of London
is expected to fetch £2,800-£3,000 when it goes under the hammer and a
large 19th Century walnut and ormolu mounted chiming bracket clock by W Page, London
(FS27/666) invites bids of £5,000-£6,000.
An Early 20th Century Games Compendium (FS27/502) is being offered in the Works
of Art auction with an estimate of £500-£700.
A 17th Century Stumpwork Picture (FS27/512) is expected to fetch £800-£1,200 at
auction.
A Chinese Silver-inlaid Bronze Censer (FS27/522) is amongst the works of art.
A Chinese Mandarin's Court Amber and Jadeite Necklace (FS27/539) from the McAlpine-Woods
Collection of Works of Art from the Far East.
Bids of between £2,500 and £3,500 are being invited for this rare Indian Mother
of Pearl and Stone Casket (FS27/612).
A Large 19th Century Walnut and Ormolu Mounted Chiming Bracket Clock (FS27/666)
by W Page of London is amongst the clocks on offer.
The final section of the second day is the
furniture,
with a large quantity of lots on offer. A
George II carved mahogany card table of Chippendale design
(FS27/696) is estimated at £4,000-£6,000, whilst a pair of
carved mahogany library armchairs in the 18th century Irish taste
(FS27/697) has a pre-sale estimate of £2,500-£3,000 and a pair of
19th Century satinwood dwarf side cabinets in the Regency taste
(FS27/700) is expected to fetch between £3,000-£5,000.
An
18th Century Flemish carved oak display cabinet
(FS27/816) has an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.
A
French carved walnut dining suite of Art Nouveau design
(FS27/847) is also expected to create interest. Decorated with vine leaves and bunches
of grapes it comprises a sideboard cabinet pedestal side/display cabinet, an oval
extending dining table and a set of six dining chairs with brass studded brown leather
panel backs. The estimate for this lot is £2,000-£3,000.
One of the last lots of the day is a
Merrow Associates rosewood and chromium circular
dining table and six chromium frame and cream leather chairs
(FS27/849). The design is by Richard Young 1960–1970 and this table and chairs,
which was purchased by the present owner from the Ideal Home Exhibition
carries an estimate of £2,000-£3,000.
A George II Carved Mahogany Card Table (FS27/696) features in the furniture auction
with a pre-sale estimate of £4,000-£6,000.
A Pair of Carved Mahogany Library Armchairs in the 18th Century Irish Taste (FS27/697).
A Pair of 19th Century Satinwood Dwarf Side Cabinets in the Regency Taste (FS27/700).
An 18th Century Flemish Carved Oak Display Cabinet (FS27/816).
