Review of June 2011 Selected Picture Sale

Published 22nd June 2011

Winchester Four I by Patrick Heron

There was a very positive and enthusiastic response to the variety of pictures in the 7th June 2011 Selected Picture sale in Honiton and by all accounts the salerooms looked fantastic with a wide range of Modern British rubbing shoulders with minor Dutch Old Masters.

The dramatic Patrick Heron screenprint, Winchester Four I, was the leading lot selling to a collector for a very impressive £3,850 and an equally striking but more figurative painting of a Fashionable Lady on a White Thoroughbred by Anna Zinkeisen, which was in need of restoration, nevertheless made £850.

The more tradition 19th century Samuel Phillip Jackson watercolour of Clovelly was bought by a specialist watercolour dealer for £1,500.

Within the continental and topographical section, two particular lots caused great interest. The beautifully executed grand villa interior by Gabriel Carelli (1820-1900, Italian) was bought by an overseas bidder on the telephone for £1,450 and is now en route to Italy and a pair of very decorative and busy Neapolitan coastal views by an unidentified hand made £1,700.

There was also an excellent section of portraits and miniatures, some dating back to the early 18th century. Among the 19th century group was a miniature of Samuel York Martin in Lieutenants uniform of the 65th Regiment of Foot, which was attributed to John James Masquerier (1778-1855) and following interest form America this was bought for £1,000.
