John James Masquerier (1778-1855)
Biography of the painter John James Masquerier (1778-1855).
John James Masquerier (1778-1855) was born in Chelsea, London, the
son of French parents.
Masquerier studied at the Royal Academy in London and won a travelling scholarship to study in Paris. He settled in Paris in 1789 and made many sketches of the French
Revolution.
In 1793, Masquerier returned to London and studied under John Hoffner. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and executed numerous commissions. He became well known in London and
forged a very successful career in portrait and genre painting.
He retired to Brighton where he still produced the occasional work. His studio sale was held at Christie's on the 19th January 1878.
