Doris Clare Zinkeisen (1898-1991)
Biography of the painter Doris Clare Zinkeisen (1898-1991)
Doris Clare Zinkeisen (1898-1991) studied at Harrow School
of Art with her sister Anna Zinkeisen (1901-1976). They both won
scholarships to the Royal Academy Schools in 1917.
Doris Clare Zinkeisen and Anna Zinkeisen shared a studio
in London and during the 1920s and 1930s embarked on a wide variety of artistic
projects including costume design, poster and advertising design, mural and traditional
painting.
They each won medals at The Paris Salon.
Their lifestyle was reflected
in their art; a mixture of society portraiture, animal portraiture including horses
and riders and genre scenes set in the parks of London and Paris showing women in
their beautiful gowns taking tea, walking their dogs and riding their horses.
It was Doris though who rose to major prominence for her costume design, working on films and theatre production with Noel Coward.
In 1941, the sisters were recruited as official war artists working for the
British Red Cross and The Order of St John. They both worked as
auxiliary nurses in St Mary's Hospital, Paddington.
In the 1940s, Doris Zinkeisen was touring war torn Europe and in 1945 she arrived at Belsen immediately after its liberation. Doris Zinkeisen wrote later "the shock of Belsen was never
to be forgotten".
There are examples of the sisters' work in The Imperial War Museum.
