Biography of artist Alan Stenhouse Gourley (1909-1991)
Allan Stenhouse Gourley (1909-1991) was born in Ayr in Scotland in 1909. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art in 1928 before moving to the Edinburgh College of Art between 1929 and 1931, where he studied under William Gillies.
He lived in South Africa between 1932 and 1937, teaching in Johannesburg.
Gourley also studied at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts (1938-40) in Paris and at the Slade (1945) in London.
Gourley travelled widely painting frequently in Spain, Italy, Morocco, Malta and Singapore.
Gourley exhibited in London and was elected President of ROI in 1964.
