Biography of artist John Glover (1767-1849)
John Glover (1767-1849) was a self-taught artist receiving some lessons from William Payne. Glover was a drawing teacher at Lichfield when he began exhibiting at the Royal Academy from 1795. He was a founder member of the Old Watercolour Society.
Glover bought a house in Ullswater, circa 1818, where he intended to retire. He sold the house to buy a Claude Lorraine painting - an artist whose work much influenced him.
Glover's subjects were mostly landscapes of the Lake District, Wales and Dovedale.
In 1831, he left for Launceston, Tasmania with his family, sending pictures of local scenery back to London for exhibition until his death in 1849.
