Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942)
Biography of West Country artist Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942)
Frederick John Widgery (1861-1942) was a west country artist. He was the younger son of William Widgery (1826-1893) (who himself was a self-taught artist) and born in May 1861. He was initially educated at Exeter Cathedral School and then at the Exeter School of Art followed by the South Kensington Museum School before travelling to Antwerp.
Widgery was a popular and active leader of the Exeter Civic Community from 1890, which was the year he settled back in the city of his birth after travelling to Antwerp to study under Charles Verlat at the National Art School and with Hubert von Herkomer in Bushey.
Widgery became Mayor of Exeter in 1903 and subsequently was made a Freeman, Alderman and was elected Chair of the City's Town Planning Committee. Widgery's civic deeds were complimented with his work as an artist and the two combine as evidence for the passion and engagement he felt for Exeter and the surrounding West Country.
Widgery was a talented painter of the landscape, moors, coast and sea and skilful at capturing the particular local light and weather. As a plein air painter, Widgery often worked in watercolour and some of his most accomplished works show a close understanding of nature in well-observed moorland fauna and passing showers.
Frederick John Widgery died on 27th January 1942 at the age of 81.
