Westcountry Olympic Memorabilia Auction

Published 13th February 2013

The feats of the competitors of the London 2012 Olympics were inspirational to us all and a recent entry for the upcoming Sporting & Collectors 20th March 2013 is one part of the history of the games and Olympic Memorabilia at auction.  A London 1908 Olympic Games silver medal for heavy weight boxing awarded to Sydney Charles H ‘Sid’ Evans (1881-1927), together with London 1908 Olympic  competitors medallion and  London 1908 Olympic competitors registration card, will no doubt attract a great deal of interest.

Sid Evans was born on Aldermaston and from his later visiting card it would seem he was quite a character in the world of amateur  boxing and Army training, listing amongst his talents ‘Ex-Amateur  Heavy-weight Boxing Champion of England, Olympic Finalist, Late Army Gym, Staff and Boxing Instructor to Aldershot Command, Referee, British Boxing Board of Control, Promoter’.  His confidence would have no doubt helped him into to being selected for the London 1908 Olympic Games, at a time when sponsorship and dedicated training regimes were unheard of.

The London 1908 Olympic medals were designed by Bertram Mackennal, an Australian sculptor, perhaps best known for the George V Coronation medal and the likeness of the king on stamps and coins of the period.  It would seem that Sid Evans was extremely proud of his achievements, having a suspension loop mounted on his London 1908 Olympic competitor’s medallion.  Judging by the wear on both the medallion and the London 1908 Olympic silver medal, he appears to have taken every opportunity to wear them with pride.
