The Selected Picture sale on Tuesday was busy, the saleroom was full and there was lots of interest and strong bidding.
There was a nice surprise with the Alan Cotton oil painting in the Selected Picture auction this week.
Alan Cotton - Crossroads on a country lane (EX63/140)
In January 2013, we sold a view of the River Otter in East Devon by Alan Cotton for £650 and I was expecting something similar for the rather dark and autumnal oil of a crossroads in the Wye Valley, which was estimated at £300-£500. It was an early oil by the artist who called me in the week to remind me that he was born in 1938 [not 1936 as per our catalogue]…..two people really wanted the painting and a short, but tense ‘bidding battle’ ensued and it was knocked down for £1,500!
