Sapphires have been associated with royalty and romance for centuries. This association was certainly reinforced in 1981 when Prince Charles gave Lady Diana Spencer a blue sapphire engagement ring.
Sapphires come in every colour. Orangey pink sapphires are known as padparadscha and are considered the most beautiful and valuable of the corundum gemstones.
Blue sapphires come in many hues. Blue sapphires with violet hues are particularly popular and saleable at auction.
The illustrated sapphire and diamond three stone ring (FS34/404) sold in our April 2017 File Sale for £3,250 and is a good example of the type of sapphire desirable today.
