The Spring 2012 quarterly Fine Sale offering of selected furniture produced some encouraging results.
For too long a time there has been heard the lamentations of the weakness in the 'brown furniture' market and just as the recession in the UK economy which dips into and out of marginal growth, one has to accept the status quo and get on with it.
This was very much the case in the recent sale with the top lots selling to a ready market and the 'old faithfuls' of brown furniture reaching an acceptable level in current times.
The top price of the day was provided by a Louis XV brass mounted coffer fort on a later walnut stand. There was keen interest from telephone bidders but the lot eventually sold to a buyer in the room for £9,200 (FS12/862). It was evidence that this example of a quality item of furniture which had been consigned from a Devon Country house will, with others always meet with a ready demand.

A Pair of George III armchairs in the French Hepplewhite taste (FS12/860).
There were two good offerings of Hepplewhite design furniture, being a pair of George III armchairs in the French Hepplewhite taste (FS12/860) which sold at £4,100 and an open armchair (FS12/856) with upholstered back which sold at £2,200.
Amongst the more decorative lots was an oval bevelled mirror in the Irish taste with a blue glass and opaque white jewelled surround which was hotly competed for with an eventual selling price of £3,300.
The next Fine Sale to be held in July 2012 will include an interesting collection of Cotswolds School furniture including a dining table by Peter van der Waals.
