Devon Cream Tea! An Art Deco Tea Service (by Charles Boynton)

Published 28th April 2012

An Art Deco period four piece tea service by Charles Boynton sold for £3,900 in our April 2012 Fine Sale. (FS12/78).

Nothing would have provided a better cup of tea for the famous Devon author Agatha Christie than this silver tea service by Charles Boynton. Entered for auction by a client living in South Devon, this tea service epitomises Art Deco design and even borders on cubism for inspiration.

Simple in line and form, the four piece tea service was practical, serviceable and elegant. Some of Charles Boynton's work was inspired by the pyramid pattern designed by Harald Nielson in 1926 for Georg Jensen and simple squares and rectangles inspired this creation.

If Hercule Poirot was to taste a Devon cream tea, then this is the service that would have poured the tea. It sold for £3,900.
