We have a painting from the Circle of Sir Francis Grant in our next fine sale. It is a charming family portrait of two Scottish boys shows them having a short break from scrapping around and playing (FS19/206).

Their faces are slightly flushed and in the foreground on the floor is a spinning top and one of their Tam O’Shantas. The boys are dressed in red tunics and posed in a theatrical looking balcony interior with an early Victorian armchair draped in an Indian paisley silk shawl and on a pedestal behind is a neo-classical urn.

However, the star of the show is a very graceful-looking rocking horse with leather bridle and horse hair mane. We have catalogued the painting as Circle of Sir Francis Grant, an important Scottish portrait painter whose subjects included Queen Victoria and other distinguished aristocratic and political figures of the time. The family portrait is offered on 3rd July 2013 in the fine picture auction with an estimate of £1,200-£1,800.
