A Van der Waals Dining Table and a Rare Tunbridgeware Wine Table in Fine Sale

Peter Van Der Waals. A solid English walnut dining table. Estimate: £4,000-£6,000 (FS12/793a).

Representing the 20th Century is a group of Cotswold School furniture associated with Alfred James. He was a supporter of Peter Van der Waals, who was the foreman/manager of Ernest Gimson's workshop at Daneway until Gimson's death in 1919. Alfred James then assisted Van der Waals in setting up his own workshop at Chalford, which continued until 1937.

The most important of this collection is a solid English walnut extending dining table by Van der Waals made for Alfred James of Edgeworth Manor, Near Stroud, Gloucestershire, with an entry on his clients ledger for 1929 'walnut expanding dining table £63 – 10 – 0 – by cash'.

The table with one extension leaf is outlined in holly and ebony chequer stringing and measures 106cm x 274cm overall. The pre-sale estimate is £4,000-£6,000. There is also an oak part bedroom suite, a side table, an oak miniature model fountainhead in the Jacobean style by James himself.

Robert Russell. A rare Tunbridgeware rosewood and marquetry tripod wine table. Estimate: £500-£700 (FS12/803).

A rare Tunbridgeware, rosewood and marquetry tripod wine table (Lot 803) by the Tunbridgeware manufacturer Robert Russell is included with an estimate of £500-£700, whilst an attractive George IV brass mounted rosewood octagonal games table with an inlaid specimen marble top (Lot 742) will make between £1,000 and £1,500.

There is the usual good selection of Georgian and Regency mahogany furniture. Lot 807 is a George IV mahogany breakfront library bookcase. With an astragal glazed upper section and cupboard base, the bookcase measures 276cm wide by 244cm high and is estimate at £4,000 and £6,000.

A George III mahogany crossbanded and inlaid secretaire bookcase. Estimate: £1,200-£1,800. (FS12/809).

A pair of Regency mahogany card and tea tables carry an estimate of between £2,000 and £3,000; and two George III mahogany secretaire bookcases (Lots 737 and 809) are estimated at £1,300–£1,500 and £1,200–£1,800 respectively.

Amongst the decorative items of furniture is an attractive French tulipwood and parquetry Bonheur du jour in the Louis XVI manner with an estimate of £2,000-£3,000. A mid 18th Century Italian giltwood console table with verde antico marble top at between £2,500 and £3,500 and a pair of black japanned serpentine commodes in the 18th Century style at £600-£800.
