Published 20th February 2013
There are over 180 lots of Selected Pictures in the Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood sale on Tuesday, 26th February 2013 with good variety and quality to choose from and estimates that range from £50 to £800.
There is a strong selection of 20th Century British pictures, including an oil by Alan Cotton, who is one of Britain's most distinguished landscape painters. The subject is a country cross roads and the painting has an estimate of £250-£350.
Dating from the 1950s/60s, there is another good oil in the British tradition by Cedric Chater (1910-1978). Chater is best known for his commercial design and, in particular, the Imperial Leather advertising of the late 1940s. The view offered here is of the Seven Sisters White Cliffs with an estimate of £80-£120.
In January, the auctioneers sold two paintings by Mary Martin for £300 and £400 and in this upcoming sale there are five more paintings by Mary Martin including one titled Summer Glade at £150-£250.
This Selected Pictures Auction also includes an impressive large still life by Charles Hardaker (b 1934) titled Autumnus (estimate £600-£800) and a sentimental group of Puppies and a kitten by a bowl of milk by Louis Roger (1874–1953), estimated at £200-£300.
Bearing in mind the recent excesses of the weather there is a Westcountry view with the added bonus of railway interest. Painted by WP Key (19th century), it depicts the South Devon Railway landslip that occurred on 29th December 1852 near the Parson and Clerk Nose, a good piece of local social history at only £80-£120.
Further afield, there is an etching which was exhibited at the Royal Academy by William Robert Hay (1886-1964). The subject is some mid 20th Century demolition work on Oxford Street in London, estimated at between £80 and £120.
Finally, for those with more traditional tastes, there are watercolours by Phillip Mitchell (1814-1896), including Cattle crossing Shaugh Bridge, Devon, estimated at £120-£180, and a view of Clovelly by Alfred Leyman (1856-1933), with an estimate of £200-£300.
