Here’s a bit of local history in our auction on 26th February 2013.
On the 29th December 1852, a local steam train was halted in its tracks between Dawlish and Teignmouth by the famous South Devon Railway landslip near the Parson and Clerk Nose. An amateur artist, one WP Key, captured the event in watercolour.

The picture depicts the Victorian passengers disembarking to inspect the red earthy rockfall. In the distance are the distinctive Parson and Clerk rock formations and the tunnel where the railway cuts through the rocks. The red rocky Parson preaching to the sea is a truly odd sight!. The watercolour, measuring 32.5 x 46.5cm, has a nice naïve feel and is likely to fetch between £80-£120.
