Lot Description

Zoetrope. A Victorian 'Wheel of Life' Zoetrope by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Co:, the 12 inch Russian lacquer drum with base card of a leaping dog and picture strip of a man's head appearing from a box, original maker's label as per title under the base card, raised on a mahogany baluster support on a domed base, 37cm high.

Notes

- This zoetrope was used by the BBC for filming stock footage for the original opening credits of the Antiques Roadshow.

Sale FS39; Lot: 0730: Grignon Meusnier, a French mantel clock with calendar the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel, the backplate stamped with the maker's details Grignon Meusnier, Paris, Breveté, 117, the skeletonised dial having a white enamelled chapter ring with black Roman numerals and blued-steel moon hands, with the balance to the movement visible within the centre along with a silvered alarm setting disc and winding arbor, with three further subsidiary dials set below within the case depicting the day, month and date, the gilt-metal case of scroll form and surmounted by a cast matching handle, the case numbered 117 and stamped with the initials GM to the decorative rear, height 19cm * Biography the founder Pierre Grignon is recorded as working in Paris from the mid-18th century. by circa 1860 the business was known as Grignon Meusnier recorded at rue Charlot 60in the heart of the clockmaking region of the city. in 1853 they had been granted a patent for the fitting of a movement pendulum (balance).
