Sale Notes

Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood have once again excelled themselves in the diversity of items on offer in their two day Sporting and Collectors’ sale on the 14th/15th November 2018. Either call in or look on line to find over 1,300 lots that should satisfy any collector.

The first day includes hunting, fishing, shooting, militaria and stamps whilst the second day includes the more traditional collectors’ items such as dolls, trains, musical instruments and diecasts. Truly there is something for everybody in this sale. Where else would you see red squirrels riding foxes in a steeplechase (Estimate £1,000-£1,500; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/67) or a pair of pugilist squirrels with a weasel in a flat cap smoking a cigarette? (Estimate £500-£700; Buyer’s premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%).(SC27/69)

If the macabre is not your thing then there are many pieces for those who are followers of country pursuits like the Victorian horse shoe timepiece (Estimate £100-£150; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/28).

Collectors of militaria and antique weapons will not be disappointed with another strong selection of pieces within the sale, like the saw handled target pistol by Staples of London (Estimate £800-£1,000; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/145) or the jade handle pesh kabez (Estimate £800-£1,000; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/146). With pieces like the World War One two blade laminated mahogany propeller by Hispano Suiza for an SE.5A Wolseley Viper (Estimate £800-£1,000; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/388) and the WWII German B-Uhr navigators' watch by Tissot (Estimate £1,500-£2,000; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/ 309), there is bound to be strong biding on the day from both the room and the Internet.

When a client walks in through the door with a 'box of things' and no expectations of anything outstanding , it is always a joy and a pleasure to find something rare and unusual like the scarce Russian Order of St Anne, Medal of Distinction for Foreigners 1911 pattern awarded to Lieutenant Commander WB Rendle RN. An unusual medal that proved a little hard to research but with the aid of the vendor researching the family tree, the pre-sale estimate of £4,000-£6,000 was even more of a thrill for them. (SC27/353)

Day Two of the sale continues with the textiles section in which an Art Deco French sequinned flapper dress (Estimate £250-£350, Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%) (SC27/680) is certainly still eye catching after nearly 100 years.

A good selection of original boxed Corgi and Dinky toys are included in the sale, as well as a selection of scale model railway pieces. Ever an eclectic auction, Day Two also has a fascinating single owner collection of corkscrews, with a number of various examples like the rare Charles Hull's patent ‘Presto’ mechanical corkscrew (SC27/1210) (Estimate £1,000-£1,500; Buyer's premium 21% plus VAT @ 20%).
