Lot Description

Ayrton Senna - The Brazilian national flag used on the parade lap and podium of the Italian Grand Prix, Monza 1992, 94cm x 132cm, together with a hand written note 'This is Ayrton's Brazilian flag waved after winning the Italian Grand Prix in 1991 (sic) (Monza). Presented to me by Peter Stayner MD of McLaren', together with an Ayrton Senna Foundation blue cloth 'National' baseball cap.

Notes

- This flag was presented to Mrs Mandy Baliffe during a visit to the McLaren team centre arranged with Peter Stayner on the 18th September 1992, which she describes on pages 218-219 of her book 'Learning to Live Again'. Mrs Bayliffe was confined to a wheel chair after a severe illness and became a fan of Formula One and in particular of Ayrton Senna. The visit to the McLaren team was arranged with Peter Stayner (1949-2016) who was the Head of Partner Management at the time. The 1992 Italian Grand Prix took place at Monza on the 13th September and was won by Ayrton from second position after both the Williams of Patrese and Masell retired with hydraulic problems. It was the last time Ayrton Senna was to win a race in a Honda powered car. At the time of the visit to the team by Mr & Mrs Bayliffe and their son Daniel, Mr Bayliffe recalls watching both the McLaren Honda cars of Senna and Berger being unloaded from the back of the team trucks and that inside the cockpit of Ayrton's car was the flag from the race at Monza. Copies of photographs of Mrs Bayliffe and Peter Stayner beside Ayrton Senna's McLaren Honda MP4/7A. are also included with the lot.
