Sale Notes

Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood’s forthcoming Sporting & Collectors Auction continues in the tradition of increasing in size and popularity by once again becoming a two day sale on the 17th & 18th May 2017 with over 1,100 lots on offer.

The first day of the sale has a good range of equestrian antiques and collectables like the late Victorian silver mounted hunting flask by Asprey & Co, London (SC24/17) as well as a selection of silver mounted riding crops by Swaine & Adney. If you fancy yourself as a bit of a ‘James Bond’ then the Walther LP Model 53 air pistol (SC24/89) will appeal to you as it was the model used in the film poster for ‘You Only Live Twice’.

Those with a penchant for earlier antique firearms will not be disappointed with the ‘Brown Bess’ 1796 pattern flintlock (SC24/111) amongst a good selection of flintlock and percussion cap pistols and rifles within the sale. Collectors of antique swords and weapons also have a good selection to peruse, including the ever useful ‘Randolph Commination knife’ (SC24/150).

As well as a selection of vintage and antique textiles and lace, the sale also has a number of musical instruments and a collection of Rock and Pop memorabilia. Artists include David Bowie, Bob Marley, Prince, The Doors and many others that will no doubt attract a lot of attention on the day.

Perhaps, the most stand out items included in the first day of the sale are the three lots relating to the pioneering days of football and the Football League. Nottingham Forrest is one of the oldest teams having been established in 1856, so the Victorian walnut decanter box dated 1886 (SC24/372) is something from the very early days of the club and should be sought after by collectors and supporters alike.

However, the gold medals for International football for both Celtic’s Billy Bannister (SC24/377) and Leicester Fosse’s Alex Bennett (SC24/347) should be the highlights of the day. Both players were well known at the turn of the century in a game that seems worlds away from that of today, but as ever early football memorabilia commands very good prices at auction, they will certainly be one’s to watch.

The second day of the sale has a good selection of stamps from around the world, including a good collection of German stamps (SC24/527) as well as a good collection of GB stamps in albums (SC24/542).

With dolls and Teddy bears continuing the sale, the main focus for many will be on the range or original boxed die cast vehicles like the Green Hornet Black Beauty Crime Fighting Car (SC24/775).

Television and film related toys always command high prices and now in 2017 with the 40th Anniversary of the original Star Wars film, it is time to look through the attic to see if you have hidden away any of the original boxed figures and vehicles like the rare vinyl caped Jawa (SC24/1111) or Chewbacca (SC24/1104).
