Lot Description
A WWII Air Force Cross group of five, Flight Lieutenant Gerald R Haggas AFC together with log books, papers and related books, Air Force Cross, 1939-45, Atlantic Star, War Medal and Defense Medal, pilots log books dating September 18th 1940 to March 14th 1951, also including a collection of personal papers and photographs, two sweetheart albums of newspaper cutting and photographs of Flight Lieut Haggas and other members of 206 Squadron, a small collection of sweetheart brooches and badges, two squadron plaques and books relating to Coastal Command.
Notes
- F/Lt Haggas was a member of the first Flying Fortress squadron in Coastal Command. During the invasion of North Africa he undertook ten meteorological flights of ten hours duration over seventeen days at altitudes of 18, 000ft without oxygen which was not available at the time. He took charge of the First Fortress Training Flight in Coastal Command and was recommended for the Air Force Cross after landing an aircraft with passengers with a 400ft cloud base and visibility of 1000 yards at night in the rain after being on duty for over 24 hours.
