An Early 20th Century 'Nansen' Pattern Arctic Sledge
Auction Lot
MA19/27
An Early 20th Century 'Nansen' Pattern Arctic Sledge (MA19/27) offered in our Maritime Auction starting on 14th August 2019 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
Lot Description
An early 20th century 'Nansen' pattern arctic sledge, unsigned, over painted in grey, ash bentwood frame with pallet deck raised on ash runners, constructed with rope and hide lashing, 220cm long.
Notes
- in 1888 Fridjof Nansen undertook the crossing of Greenland for which he designed lightweight sledges. Rather than relying on the overly complex and heavy dependence of manpower that previous expeditions had used, Nansen designed the sledges and equipment from scratch so that a team of six men could carry everything they required.
Provenance
- This Sledge Was Purchased By The Owner's Father In The 1950s As He Thought That It Would Make An Ideal Family Toboggan. It Is Not Known Where He Purchased It From.
