Sale Notes

The Maritime Auction of 14th August 2019 starts with a unique collection of twenty –six lots from the Polar Archive of Francis Davies RN, who was the shipwright on board the Terra Nova Expedition of 1910-1913 and participated in the Discovery II Expeditions in the 1920s. The collection covers his time aboard both RSS Discovery II and RSS William Scoresby, including a photographic record of the Second Wilkins-Hearst Expedition of 1929-1930 and a number of personal letters.

The sale also has a model of HMS Victory in her first commission 1780, constructed from ships' timbers by the artist Harold Wyllie (1880-1973) (MA19/289), which carries an estimate of £4,000-£5,000 (Buyer's premium 23% plus VAT ), that was originally exhibited in the Royal Academy in 1912.

There are many highlights within each section of the auction such as the 2 inch pocket globe by Nathaniel Hill (fl 1746-1748) (MA19/144) and the scrimshaw tusk by Joe Austin Kakarook (XIX-XX) (MA19/172) and also a number of historically interesting pieces like the WWII 'Periscope No 34 MK I' by Ross of London from an XT class midget submarine (MA19/121).

For maritime collectors, the auction promises to have something from every era of marine history to attract buyers to the saleroom on the day and internationally over the Internet with online bidding.
