Of Napoleonic interest - A 19th century mahogany brass bound box reputedly once containing a section of shell of Napoleon's coffin, the lid with rectangular brass plaque inscribed with 'model of a piece of one of the shells of Napoleons coffin - which was in RE stores St.Helena of 1842-1868' with handwritten label to interior 'a piece of the shell of Napoleon 1st coffin - originally the dining table of the father of Col St.John RE who was stationed at Nethey 1903-06. This I bought from St.Helena in 1869 - it was given to me by the son of the Sergt Major of French Engineers who was in attendance over Napoleon at Longwood. in 1869 his son was Sergt Major in French Engineers & is now a French console in St.Helena and despite his great age - wrote me in 1905 that he was 'as hearty as ever' ... Phillips Major R Royal Engineers 10.7.08' 15.5cm x 10 x 6cm.
