A Chinese blue and white 'Buddhist Emblems' bowl the exterior finely painted with the archaic characters 'shan gao shui chang' [the hills are high, the rivers are long] within four reserves amongst the Eight Buddhist Emblems 'bajixiang' and lotus flowers and tendrils, the interior with a shou medallion and ruyi-head border, four-character mark within double circles 'The bingwu year of Qianlong' corresponding to 1786, 17cm.

Lot Description

A Chinese blue and white 'Buddhist Emblems' bowl the exterior finely painted with the archaic characters 'shan gao shui chang' [the hills are high, the rivers are long] within four reserves amongst the Eight Buddhist Emblems 'bajixiang' and lotus flowers and tendrils, the interior with a shou medallion and ruyi-head border, four-character mark within double circles 'The bingwu year of Qianlong' corresponding to 1786, 17cm.

Provenance

The Above Lot Was Acquired Either By Edward George Pellew Mayers [1840-1911] During Military Service In China And Japan Between 1870 And 1880 Or His Son Edward Courtenay Pellew Mayers [1878-1933] Who Visited China In 1911. Thence By Direct Family Descent.
