A Bristol blue and white delftware 'Electioneering' plate inscribed 'Rolle for Ever' within a Merryman wreath cartouche, early 18th century, 21cm diameter [minor chips and glaze losses to rim]. * Note the Rolles of Stevenstone near Torrington were one of the leading landowning families of Devon and represented several Devon constituencies in Parliament. The present inscription could refer to one of two campaigns for election the first in 1722 when John Rolle stood against three other candidates for the seat of Exeter and the second in 1741 when his son Henry stood for Barnstaple They were both successful with Henry unopposed. Cf. Lincoln Halliman 'British Commemoratives' for a similar example and other delftware electioneering plates.
