Lot Description
English Provincial School, 18th Century - Portrait of Black John, jester, full-length standing,- oil on canvas, 103 x 62cm * Note. Black John, said to be Jester to J Arscott of Tetcott [of hunting fame]. Arscott [1718-1788] was the last man in England to keep a professional jester and, on his death, left the Tetcott property, where he was buried, to the Molesworths. Black John was so attached to his master that he built a shelter close to the church at Tetcott and there, with an old hound as his sole companion, he grieved away the remainder of his life and died of a broken heart.
