Lot Description

Joel and Jan Martel (1896-1966) a pottery figure group of Les soldats de bois modelled after the original by Fau et Gilliard at Boulogne sur Seine, impressed marks to base and incised facsimile signature, circa 1921-25, 35cm wide, [cracked with glue repair to four necks].

Notes

Joel and Jan Martel were sculptor twins, jointly signing their works, who were founder members of Union des Artistes Modernes, Born together and tragically dying within six months of each other. This particular work depicts the Parade of the wooden soldiers which appeared in Nikita Balieff's popular cabaret 'The Bat'.
