Sir Alfred James Munnings [1878-1959] Children Playing Bagatelle signed A J.Munnings and dated '98 bottom right watercolour heightened with white 20.75 x 25cm.

Munnings Exhibition 1928 Entry No.163, Norwich Castle Museum, Lent By J Shaw Tompkins Esq; With Original Exhibition Label On The Back Of The Picture. Private Collection John Shaw Tompkins Was An Important Early Patron Of The Artist. He Was Managing Director Of A J.Caley & Sons Of Norwich Whose Chocolate And Mineral Water Factory Was Nextdoor To Page Bros. Lithographers Where Munnings Was Apprenticed. The Artist's Work And Designs Came To The Attention Of Shaw Tompkins And Commissions From Caleys Soon Took Precedence Over Other Work. The Two Children Could Be Those Of One Of The Artist's Aunts, Possibly Aunt Rosa, In The Interior At Walsham Hall, Suffolk. * Literature: Jean Goodman AJ - The Life Of Alfred Munnings 1878-1959, The Erskine Press.
