Lot Description

Of Royal Interest - A Regency mahogany and satinwood inlaid sideboard, of bowed breakfront outline, bordered with boxwood and ebony lines and with boss ornament, fitted with a central frieze and recessed apron drawer flanked by a deep drawer to either side, between satinwood pilaster stiles on ring turned and reeded tapered legs, 183cm (6ft) long.

Notes

The back with paper label 'Athlone Drawing Room' - The former property of H RH. Princess Alice - removed from Kensington Palace in 1981.

Sale FS40; Lot: 0814: John Upjohn, Exeter, a mahogany bracket clock the eight-day duration, double-fusee movement with verge escapement striking the hours on a bell, the shaped backplate with border engraving (now missing alarm work), the eight-inch round painted dial with black Roman numerals and signed John Upjohn, Exeter, with blued steel spade hands, the arched-top mahogany case with brass frets above and below the dial and to the sides and surmounted by a brass carrying handle, on brass bracket feet, height 47cm *Biography the Upjohn family were a well-known and prolific family of clockmakers working in both Exeter and London, with James Upjohn of Red Lion Square, born 1822, having travelled extensively in Europe when trying to promote his business to a wider field. The Exeter branch of the family included, amongst others, William Upjohn, baptised in 1754 and who moved to London in 1803; John Upjohn, born 1771, who married Maria Wittingham before moving to London, when on his return in 1803 he took over the premises of William before dying in 1848 'after a long and painful illness, borne with Christian fortitude'; their son Robert Wittingham Upjohn, also a chronometer maker born 1807, who took over from his father as keeper of the Exeter Cathedral clock where his initials can be found carved and dated 1824.

Sale FS37; Lot: 1030: An Edwardian miniature tortoiseshell and silver carriage clock the eight-day duration timepiece movement having a platform lever escapement, the round dial with black Roman hour numerals and blued steel spade hands, the tortoiseshell case inset with silver decoration, mounts and carrying handle, hallmarked for London 1906, height 9cm (handle up) 7.5cm (handle down).

Sale SS2; Lot: 0064: An early 12-bolt square corselet diving helmet by CE Heinke Sub Marine Engineer, Gt. Portland Street, London, stamped number '2', three circular observation windows, the front window with safety chain, lashing eyes above, rear air inlet, outlet valve to the rear of the left side window, thumb screw lock to the rim, the corselet with centre mounted outlet valve, flanked by copper bar weight hangers, the brails with reinforcing ridges and wing nuts stamped as per title, 47cm high. *Note - CE Heinke were at this address from 1860 until 1904.
