Notes

With Christies, London 19 September 1999, Lot 52. * Biography Gustave Alaux studied at the School of Fine Art in Paris 1907-1914. He developed a passion for maritime subjects, studying naval history and becoming a member of the Salon de la Marine. He painted several works for the Navy College and was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1928. The Caribbean subject theme is prominent in his body of work

Sale FS37; Lot: 1183: A Victorian walnut and inlaid writing and work table, of shaped outline, bordered with boxwood lines and decorated with stylised foliate designs, the quarter veneered hinged top with bowed ends enclosing a fitted interior with adjustable rachetted tooled leather inset writing surface, having a fitted and maple lined frieze drawer and upholstered pleated and tapered sliding well below, on twin turned and reeded column end and dual splayed legs with carved paterae, united by a turned and reeded stretcher, terminating in castors, 72cm (2ft 4 1/2in) wide.

Sale FS37; Lot: 1072: R J Bickell, South Molton, a floor-standing regulator the eight-day duration, timepiece movement having a dead-beat escapement with screw-adjustment for the depthing of the wheel arbors, with a brass-bound weight and brass bob to the wood-rod pendulum, the round silvered fifteen-inch dial engraved with a typical regulator layout showing seconds to the outer aspect and with hour and minute subsidiary dials to the centre and engraved with the name RJ Bickell, So. Molton, with blued steel spade hands, the curved topped mahogany case having a glazed trunk door, canted corners, inset shaped panels to the hood either side of the dial and an inset panel to the base, height 202cm * Biography Richard John Bickell is recorded as a clock and watchmaker, silversmith and gunsmith at South Street, South Molton in 1838 and then Broad Street from 1844 until 1878. He was mayor of the town in 1852 and made and supplied the Town Hall clock in 1851/52 for which he was paid £101.00. The address for the business was given as 19, Broad Street in 1883, whilst his home address is recorded as Sunnyside.
