Lot Description

John Everett Millais [1829-1896] - Effie Dean - signed with a monogram and dated 1876 lower right watercolour heightened with white 36 x 30.5cm.

Notes

Effie Dean is a character in Sir Walter Scott's novel the Heart of Midlothian Effie's sister, Jeanie Dean, was one of Scott's most celebrated women of 19th century fiction renowned for honesty, sincerity and a strong religious conviction. When Effie is wrongly convicted of murdering her own child, Jean makes her way from Scotland to London to find an audience with the Queen who she impresses with her eloquence and broad Scottish accent. The Queen agrees to intercede with the King, who agrees a pardon for the innocent Effie.
