Lot Description
James Dickson Innes [1887-1914] - Grey Mediterranean - signed and inscribed as titled twice on the reverse further inscribed on the reverse 'Mrs Cole' and 'Horace de Vere Cole' oil on board 29.5 x 39.5cm.
Notes
Innes was a pioneer in Britain of directly painted landscapes in strong colours, which he first used in Collioure in the South of France in 1908. He exhibited with the Camden Town Group in 1911, but like Augustus John was only a fringe member.
Provenance
William Horace De Vere Cole [1881-1936] Was An Eccentric Prankster And Poet Born In Ireland. As An Undergraduate At Cambridge University, Cole Posed As A Sultan Who Was Visiting London, And Made An 'official' Visit To His Own College Accompanied By His Friend Adrian Stephen, The Brother Of Virginia Woolf. Following The Sultan Of Zanzibar Prank, Cole, With His Mane Of Hair And Bristling Moustache, Who Was Often Confused With British Prime Minister Ramsay Macdonald, Executed A Series Of Bold Jokes And Escapades Principally Aimed At Deflating Pompous Figures Of Authority His Targets Included Members Of Parliament, City Businessmen And Naval Officers. On One Occasion He Directed A Group Of Like-minded Friends Dressed As Workmen, As They Dug A Trench Across Piccadilly.
