A Worcester [First Period] Armorial Mug
Auction Lot
FS32/636
A Worcester [First Period] Armorial Mug (FS32/636) offered in our Two Day Fine Art Sale starting on 4th October 2016 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
Lot Description
A Worcester [First Period] armorial mug of cylindrical form with grooved loop handle, decorated in the atelier of James Giles with the coat-of-arms of Fleetwood with wolf's head crest and supported by pine leaves, flanked on either side with a sepia neo-classical urn hung with drapery, the rim with a band of vines, scattered floral sprays below including auricula, forget-me-not and scarlet pimpernel, circa 1765-70, 14cm high.
Notes
The armorial is definitely of Fleetwood although the green motifs in the top right and lower left quarters are unidentified but possibly relate to a family name in a previous generation. The distinctive supporting pine leaves appear on other armorials decorated in the Giles workshops, including those of Hayes, Acclom and Calmady. The remaining pieces of the Calmady service were sold by the descendants of the family at Bearne's, Torquay in 1985.
