Sale Notes
I suspect much like me when you see the word Tatzelwurm, your natural instinct is to reach for the dictionary. Apparently, it is a creature with a cat-like head attached to a serpent body that appears in Alpine folklore and, if your curious, one is depicted on an Italian micro mosiac brooch (FS31/221) in the next jewellery section of the next Fine Sale.
Equally as grotesque in appearance, but bearing a playful smile, there is a Han Dynasty pottery Balladeer (FS31/540), being of rather stout appearance and banging a small drum, he looks like a piece of 20th century art rather than something made 2,000 years ago.
Something that is definitely 20th century and possessing a rather naïve and childlike charm are the paintings of Helen Bradley who started painting in her sixties after a chance meeting with LS Lowry. We have two of her typical works on offer Going Home from Great Aunt Janes' (FS31/361) and Piccadilly, Manchester 1915 (FS31/362).
Although a teetotum ball (FS31/789) has the appearance of a brightly coloured child's toy, it is used for the rather more grown up pastime of gambling.
Perhaps something a little more genteel would be a spot of tea drinking and what could be more appropriate than having it prepared and served in a Chinese silver tea service (FS31/107) whilst you view the carpets. This sale has the largest offering of carpets we have seen for many years with forty-four on offer. Many can be purchased for a few hundred pounds, but if you want to push the boat out then bid on the large Heriz carpet (FS31/913), which is estimated at £1,500-£2,000.
