A Chinese Small Famille Rose Cong Vase (FS28/492) offered in our Two Day Fine Art Sale starting on 6th October 2015 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
Lot Description
A Chinese small famille rose Cong vase with Buddhist lion ring handles, finely painted on two sides with geese, swallows and flowering plants, the opposing sides with black poetic inscriptions within iron red and grisaille flowerhead diaper borders, the concave shaped rim and base decorated with a black key pattern and peony scrolls on a gilt ground, iron red four character mark for the 'Hall for the Cultivation of Virtue', 13cm high.
Notes
The inscriptions can be translated to read 'Purple blossoms and green willow billowing in the fragrant air/ Geese befriended amongst reeds in the pond'.
