Notes

In the late 19th Century Falmouth was an important centre for visiting ships of many nationalities. These larger vessels were less frequent visitors from 1900 although the harbour was crowded with picturesque small sailing craft. Tuke's cliff top cottage was the ideal place to watch the arrival and departure of sailing vessels, even those which did not actually enter the harbour but anchored in the bay for steamers or punts to approach with messages or orders for the ports of discharge One day in 1900 Tuke recorded ''the great visitation of ships - The most wonderful I have ever seen. About 9 o'clock there were six four-masters at one time in the bay and six or seven other large ones carrying a great press of canvas in a light west wind. It came in wet with a strong wind about midday but they kept coming until 5 o'clock'. When in Falmouth Tuke tried never to miss the sight of one of these great vessels and when possible, to capture it in a small oil sketch or watercolour. These studies were, in his own lifetime and have continued to be since, amongst the most popular examples of his work.
