Gavelle L'é Paris, a French Louis XVI mantel clock the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half hours on a bell with a numbered outside countwheel and signed Gavelle L'é Paris, the round white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, red Arabic quarter hour markings and an inner date ring, with gilt brass hands and blued steel date hand, signed with a repeat signature, the drum case supported by white marble columns with fluted black marble panels set to the front, with a pair of classical female figures, one depicting the Goddess Athena holding a shield with a gorgon's head embellished, the other depicting Justice reading a tablet, the pillars surmounted by a pair of cast lions, the clock surmounted by a cast eagle and all standing on a shaped white marble base with applied gilt mounts and cast feet, height: 68cms.

Notes

There are various makers named Gavelle recorded working in Paris including Jean-Jacques at Rue de la Huchette from 1772; his son Pierre at various addresses including Rue aux Juifs in 1800, where he died aged forty-nine; Maurice-Jacques at Rue Salle au Comte in the same year and Jean-Alexandre who was apprenticed in 1783. Another example with a similar case, and signed by the Parisian clockmaker Charles Le Roy, is illustrated in Encyclopédie de la Pendule Français, by Pierre Kjellberg, page 203. There is a further example in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs de Paris.
