An Early 19th Century 'Macao Export' Ivory Chess Set (FS22/762) offered in our Three Day Fine Art Sale starting on 29th April 2014 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
Lot Description
An early 19th century 'Macao Export' ivory chess set one side stained red, the other side left natural, Europeans versus Chinese, red King and Queen as European monarchs, bishops as clergy, white King and Queen as Emperor and Empress, white bishops as Mandarins, knights as horses heads, rooks as foliate towers, red rook bearing Union flag, the pawns as attendants, the King 11cm high, the rook 65cm high, contained in a black lacquer and gilt decorated folding chess board with backgammon to the interior.
