Sale Notes

The Winter Fine Sale on the 21st/22nd January 2014 has an excellent selection of antiques of all sorts, most of which come from private sources and are “fresh to the market”.

For people who like the gleam of silver on their dining tables, but for whom the price of solid silver is a little steep, there are some attractive Sheffield and electroplated items on offer including an elegant four branch candelabrum with a pair of matching candlesticks (FS21/13) with a modest estimate of £250-£350.

The jewellery section has some elegant antique jewellery as well as pieces to attract lovers of big bright diamonds.

The picture department are presenting works by local artists, such as the Widgerys (FS21/347a-351, FS21/357, FS21/360) and Shapland (FS21/361), as well as several works by the Rhead family (see Rhead-Cronin Collection and extensive blogging elsewhere). Also of note are a charming group of bird studies by the living artist Edwin Penny (FS21/380-384). It is always a pleasure to offer works by contemporary artists which give one faith in the future, though of course bear in mind the "Artist's Resale Right" levy which may be applied.

A broad mix of ceramics includes a couple of earlier and more rare Doulton figures: 'A Child's Grace', designed by Lawrence Perughini (FS21/526) and 'Tony Weller', designed by Charles Noke (FS21/529). These pieces possess a charm and style which is perhaps not to be found so strongly in modern Doulton figures, and are keenly pursued by collectors.

The diverse Works of Art department has an exciting selection of material as usual: There is a good selection of Chinese ware including fans, (FS21/686, FS21/689) bronzes (FS21/699, FS21/703-705, FS21/709-722), ivories (FS21/713) and jade (see Westcountry Jade Collection) which will appeal to a market which remains vibrant if unpredictable. Lot 784 may appeal to those whose interest has recently been aroused in the life of PL Travers and would like their very own Mary Poppins parrot umbrella. A star lot should be the early 18th century barometer by John Halifax of Barnsley (FS21/833), founder of a small dynasty of clockmakers. Barometers do not get a lot better than this.

The market for antique furniture has certainly taken a bit of a beating over the past few years, but the right piece can still attract substantial bids: Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood had an interesting selection of pieces by the Barnstaple firm of Shapland and Petter in our last fine sale and a sideboard in this sale designed by William Cowie (FS21/924) will attract the attention of Arts & Crafts enthusiasts. A unique item is the Penrose Irish Shell Cabinet (FS21/914), which contains a fantasy grotto created from shells collected around Tranmore and the River Suir. Even more traditional antiques such as an 18th century kneehole desk(FS21/875) still have great appeal and a small and useful piece of furniture such as this, especially with the attractive warm colour of walnut, will suit many homes.

The Ceramics section of the sale will start at 10:00am. The Print, PDF and Online Page-by-Page versions of the catalogue incorrectly state 10:00pm.
