FS17: Three Day Fine Art Sale

The Diaries of Col Edmund Gilling Hallewell 1857-1865

Auction Lot FS17/383

The diaries of Col Edmund Gilling Hallewell 1857-1865, covering the years of his posting in Malta as Deputy Quartermaster General, which lasted until his return to England and appointment as Commandant of the Royal Military College at Sandhurst, in 1863. The diaries are wide-ranging, covering army administration, family life (his wife and children were with him in Malta), friends, Hallewell's monthly domestic accounts, and his own appalling sufferings from gout. The diaries provide a particularly rich anecdotal account of military life in the Mediterranean theatre at this critical period in European history, which includes the invasion of Italy by the emperor, Napoleon III, and the Risorgimento.

The Diaries of Col Edmund Gilling Hallewell 1857-1865 (FS17/383) offered in our Three Day Fine Art Sale starting on 29th January 2013 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
