Sale Notes

The next sale at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood rather appropriately sees spring in by offering a couple of eggs. Whilst the sale of birds eggs is illegal the sale of fossilised eggs is not. Estimated at £100-200 there are two Hadrosaurus eggs on offer (EX226/399) – a Hadrosaur being a 30 foot long bipedal dinosaur that most probably was beaked, quite fitting for an egg layer. Whilst not 70 million years old there are also two glazed pottery Egyptian funerary figures, or Shabti (EX226/595) as they were known. Generally glazed blue or green these small figures would be placed within the bandages of a mummy to protect it – as these two are now for sale one can only assume they were not too effective hence the estimate of £40-60 . Amongst the more traditional lots there is a group of three Worcester porcelain jugs (EX226/45) part of a large single owner collection, two printed in the Natural Sprays pattern and one in the Fence pattern dating from 1770 they seem by comparison almost new. Moving into the 20th century there is a quirky facsimile London Underground poster (FS226/293) depicting two penguins off to London Zoo – a classic piece of mid 20’s graphic art that is offered with the art work for a rather saucy French poster. And finally bang up to date there is a signed limited edition Beryl Cook print of a leopard print attired stripper entertaining a group of Plymouth ladies on a night out (EX226/302) which is one of four in the sale, so you are spoilt for choice.
