Sale Notes

There truly is plenty on offer in the Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood Antiques and Interiors sale on Tuesday, 15th June 2021, from silver and costume jewellery to modern and traditional pictures, collectables and antique furniture.

Local social history is in evidence with a pair of Exeter Penny Dinner Society plates, with an estimate of £50-£70 (EX259/250). The Society was founded in 1872 when the public were urged to contribute to a fund that supplied meals to orphaned and destitute children and those that attended the 'Ragged School'. The Penny Dinner Society operated from each November until April and continued up until the 1930s. The meals were cooked and served in the newly completed Exeter Mission Hall, which today is occupied by local businesses.

In the picture section, a number of contemporary paintings stand out. Bristol based artist Barrington Moore Tabb (b 1934) typically paints in heavy impasto and the view of Totterdown from The River is a good example. Measuring 18 x 52cm and well framed it has an estimate of £80-£120* (EX259/358).

In a similar style, there is a small piece of polystyrene beach salvage painted by Simeon Stafford (b 1956), which will appeal to a collector looking for something unusual and current in terms of the environment; this has an estimate of £50-£70 (EX259/407).

A pair of small late 20th Century oils by ‘Slade’ would suit a bright interior. They depict caricatures of a gentleman at a Tea Stall and a lady at a Flower Stall. These have good quality moulded pine frames and an estimate of £50-£70 (EX259/ 406).

There is a familiar view of Torquay too. Painted in the first half of the 20th Century by Leonard Richmond (1889-1965) (EX259/359) shows small trawlers and pleasure craft in a sunlit harbour and a view to the town beyond. This is oil on board and has an estimate of £250-£350*. A Cadbury’s Dairy Milk metal money box in the form of a milk churn, 14cm. ticks boxes for Vintage and Advertising and hopefully it would encourage a child to save some pennies and is estimated at £30-£50 (EX259/573).

The auction also includes a range of furniture among which is a single late 19th Century simulated bamboo and painted side chair with rush seat. This chic look of the Orient is very much on point with current interior design, estimate is £40-£60 (EX259/708).
