Sale Notes
The Antiques & Interiors auction at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood in Exeter on Tuesday, 15th September 2020 includes a group of sculptures inspired by the ancient spirit of Omar Khayam and Rumi's exotic poetry. These are the work of Am Afifi (1949-2019) who exhibited regularly in Europe and declared "My art reflects my attitude to life and contains solemn and philosophical expressions counterbalanced by joyful and hedonistic imagery." Two bronzed resin busts -The Thinker and The Dream and Consequence of Lust are a typical example of the thought provoking themes and offered together they have an estimate of £60-£90* (EX253/331).
Among the more traditional antiques is a four-tier treen spice tower with containers for Ginger, Mace, Cloves and Nutmeg, which comes with a collection of vintage kitchenalia including grinders, mortars, pestles and boxes estimated at £60-£100* (EX253/301).
For the Royal Worcester collectors, a pair of blush ivory vases are offered together with a similar pair of jugs with an estimate of £120-£160* (EX153/39) and among the picture section, which includes miniatures and 19th Century paintings, there are also more contemporary works, including an etching of Duncombe Park by John Brunsdon with a lithograph of Christchurch by Edwin La Dell estimated at £80-£120* (EX253/199).
Finally, returning to the theme of the exotic (or is it erotic?), the 1990s Cologne exhibition poster for BilderLust Erotische Photographie is estimated at £30-£50* (EX253/238).
