Sale Notes

Among the Works of Art, Pictures, Jewellery, Ceramics and Furniture in the Antiques & Interiors Auction at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood on Tuesday, 7th August 2018 is an amusing mid-19th century English armorial lustre jug, which is relief decorated with a man in a loin cloth surrounded by a menagerie of animals including lions, wild cats and sheep. The jug is unmarked, but the purple lustre decoration hints at a North Country factory and whoever decorated it had a fine imagination and great sense of humour. It is a charming piece with a modest estimate of £50-£70*.(EX213/479).

A more contemporary ceramic is the Danish, Royal Copenhagen Aluminai Tenera Faience vase. With a traditional nod to earlier form, the 1960s decoration by Kari Christensen gives the vase a very ‘modern’ feel and the estimate is £60-£90*. (EX213/488).

The large jewellery section includes items with estimates from £50 to £2,000* and among them is an 18ct gold rectangular-link bracelet of textured design, estimated at £1,000-£1,200* (EX213/123), a gold and coral bead single-string necklace at £500-£700* (EX213/221) and a 19th century diamond mounted crescent brooch at £1,600-£1,800.(EX213/269).

The picture part of the auction also boasts some eye-catching modern paintings including two by Michael Warren who was born in 1942. This example, in oil impasto, shows a gentleman relaxing in a deck chair and has an estimate of £100-£150* (EX213/618).

From the turn of the century comes a London School art class nude study of a standing man, dating from circa 1910. This oil painting has an estimate of £80-£120* (EX213/568).

The auction goes on view on Saturday, 4th August 2018 and starts at 10am on Tuesday, 7th August 2018.
