Sale Notes

The 500 lot Antiques & Interiors Auction at Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood on Tuesday, 16th January 2018 includes a collection of animal ornaments and figurines from various factories. There is a charming tile decorated with a cheeky terrier puppy after an illustration by Cecil Aldin. The tile is likely to have been produced by Carter & Co of Poole in Dorset, later to become The Poole Pottery. Cecil Aldin was Master of the South Berkshire Foxhounds and in the First World War worked as a Purchasing Officer at an Army Remount Depot. The awful fate of horses during the war must have been felt by many owners and among the first horses to be given up by Aldin to the army were some of his own. After the war Aldin hunted with the Devon & Somerset Stag Hounds and was active among the Exmoor community, becoming a successful equestrian artist and illustrator. The tile has an estimate of £40-£60* (EX200/81).

On the hunting theme, there are two Royal Copenhagen porcelain figures of foxes, one modelled as a vixen with four cubs and the other seated with head raised. The largest is 11cm. and the estimate for the two is £50-£70* (EX200/76). There is also a good collection of Doulton in the auction that includes a Lambeth stoneware lemonade jug of tapering form embossed with stylised blooms. The base has the incised monograms for the decorator Eliza Simmance and an assistant. The jug has a strong Art Nouveau influence and design and measures 22cm. high, the estimate is £50-£70* (EX200/74).

The Japanese bronze vase dates for the Meiji period and measures 12.5cm. It is beautiful quality, decorated with an understated inlaid design of a goose landing in moonlight and the estimate is £80-£120* (EX200/267).

Among a large picture section of oils, watercolours and prints from the 19th and 20th centuries is a still life of Penstemon & Petunias by John Whitlock Codner (1913-2008) with an estimate of £50-£80* (EX200/209).

There is also a group of paintings by Eric Haysom Craddy including two oils of Brixham Trawlers in Brixham Harbour, which are estimated at £60-£90* (EX200/207).
