Sale Notes
Our November 2013 Select Picture auction in Exeter comprises over 100 oil paintings,
watercolours, miniatures, etchings and engravings. The sale goes on view
on Saturday, 16th November 2013 in our new South West of England Centre of Auction Excellence.
Amongst these pictures is a watercolour of the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus.
It is an evocative post-WWII image by William Francis Longstaff (1879-1953).
It depicts a newspaper seller, trams and shoppers on a damp winter day with street
lights reflected on the wet street. The pre-sale estimate is £150-£200.
If the thought of a wet London day seems too dreary for you then a bright and reticulated Chamberlain Worcester cabinet cup (EX79/231) might do the trick, but it's inability to hold liquid of any kind might keep you guessing exactly what it was meant for?
Something else that would keep you amused for hours might be a 19th century lignum vitae balboquet (cup and ball game) (EX79/591), quite a rarity, for £200-£300.
There can be no doubt as to what the Davenport Chalcedony bough pot and cover that forms lot 239 was used for - that ought to be blooming obvious! The same could be said of the pair of gilt spelter candlesticks decorated in the Japanese manner with cranes estimated at £100-£150 (EX79/463).
