Sale Notes
Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood's Antiquarian Book Auction on the 21st August 2013 has a wonderful mix of lots to appeal to most interests.
A small but fascinating collection of material relating to the early days of television and recorded sound stands out, as does an extensive one-owner collection of Devon Books and ephemera.
In the latter group are such treasures as an original catalogue for the 1938 auction at which Agatha Christie bought Greenway House. The diaries of Colonel Edmund Gilling Hallewell, who was Deputy Quartermaster General in Malta in the mid-19th century, give a wonderful insight into military life at the time of Napoleon's invasion of Italy and, on a more domestic level, Colonel Hallewell's own desperate battle with gout.
An important manuscript cookery book is the highlight of a section relating to early recipe books and domestic life.
