Biography

Steve Warren has been with Bearnes Hampton & Littlewood for many years working as a porter at our salerooms in Okehampton Street in Exeter.

The porters are responsible for setting up each auction in the saleroom complex and help buyers and vendors collect or consign their valuables.

Sale FS39; Lot: 0607: A rare Chinese cloisonné enamel and gilt-bronze tripod censer, Ming Dynasty the globular body with twin arching reeded handles ending with ruyi heads and eight wave pattern bosses below the rim, decorated with a design of four taotie masks amongst scrolling foliage with a band of archaistic dragons above, three large lotus blooms to the underside in green, yellow, blue, brown, white and black enamels on a turquoise ground, on lotus bud cabriole legs, 21cm wide, 16cm high. * This fine censer was purchased at a house sale in Devon circa 1964/65 by the late husband of the present owner. He attended the sale with the intention of buying a Georgian tallboy, which he did, but when viewing saw the censer, liked the colour of the enamels and purchased it for a modest sum. It was used for several years as a plant pot but after being itemised in a late 1970s insurance valuation, was 'upgraded' to a desk tidy for paper clips and pens.

Sale FS17; Lot: 0850: A 19th Century French carved giltwood centre table in the Louis XIV taste, surmounted by a rectangular panel of breche violette marble, within a foliate border, the cushion frieze decorated with foliage and with shaped and pierced acanthus and paterae aprons, on openwork square section tapered legs with acanthus leaf husk and paterae ornament, united by curved acanthus scroll stretchers with central finial, the top 165cm (5ft 5in) x 85cm (2ft 9 1/2in).

Sale SC22; Lot: 0201: A 17th century Turkish Kilij, the broad reinforced blade with single curved edge and double edged point, inset with gold koftgari and tughra, two further rectangular calligraphic panels surrounding a star, the downward swept hilt and handle inset with coral and turquoise, in a matching scabbard also inset five oval turquoise and gilt inscriptions, the reverse with floral geometric decoration, blade length 71cm.
