Summer Sale Preview
A preview of The Summer Sale, which is one our largest to-date spreading over three
days, and follows on from the Sale of Antique Kitchenalia in the same week.
A Mid Victorian, 18ct Gold and Silver, Oval, Mixed-cut, Colour Change Sapphire and
Old, Single and Rose-cut Diamond Pendant (FS54/1344) offered in our Three Day Fine
Art Sale starting on 13th July 2022 at our salerooms in Exeter, Devon.
We have all been very busy preparing The Summer Sale, one of our largest auctions
to date and there are some fantastic highlights to mention.
Day One (Wednesday, 13th July 2022) starts off with the silver section, where a
Victorian silver Paxton pattern part flatware service, maker Chawner & Co, London
(FS54/685) dated 1878, is inviting bids of £800-£1,000, whilst a pair of German
silver models of woodpeckers (FS54/891) by maker L Neresheimer & Co and
with import marks for Berthold Muller, London 1925 carries a pre-sale estimate of
£800-£1,000.
A huge selection of jewellery follows and it is difficult to ear mark a few highlights,
as there are some absolutely stunning pieces on offer. Joan Lowther MA DGA FGA
has certainly had her work cut out cataloguing so many wonderful pieces, including
a mid Victorian, 18ct gold and silver, oval, mixed cut, colour change sapphire and
old, single and rose-cut diamond pendant (FS54/1344). The sapphire weight alone
is calculated at 9.20cts, whilst the total estimated old-cut diamond eight is 9cts.
Accompanied by a report from the Gem & Pearl Laboratory, this beautiful piece
of jewellery is expected to fetch £12,000-£15,000. Also within the jewellery section
of the sale is an early Victorian, 22ct gold, old-cut diamond ring (FS54/1345).
The diamond is reputed to be a ‘Golconda’ diamond from the ancient mines of India
and carries an estimate of £3,000-£4,000.
Day Two of The Summer Sale (Thursday, 14th July 2022) commences with the ceramics
and glass, where a set of five large 19th Century green glass pharmacy bottles/carboys
(FS54/1370) are inviting bids of £1,200-£1,800 and a Chinese funerary equestrian
group (FS54/1398) is expected to fetch between £1,000 and £1,200.
There are some great looking paintings being offered on day two of the auction,
including The Venetian Waterfront, by Edmond Louis Dupain (1847–1933) (FS54/1691).
This painting carries a good piece of provenance, directly from the artist to Monsieur
Herro, the great grandfather of the present owner and thence by family descent.
The pre-sale estimate is £800-£1,200.
Also within the paintings are a pair of oils on canvas, by George Callow (fl 1855–1873)
depicting a beach scene with a busy harbour beyond and a companion piece (FS54/1698).
Bids of £1,200-£1,800 are invited for the pair.
Day Three of The Summer Sale (Friday, 15th July 2022) kicks off with the works of
art section of the sale. Highlights include a large Chinese dated bronze censer
(FS54/1779) of compressed bombe form with mythical beast-head handles and spreading
base, which carries an estimate of £1,000-£2,000 and a beautiful Liberty & Co
George V hammered silver cased mantel timepiece (FS54/1966), Birmingham 1918. Of
rectangular outline to a design after Archibald Knox, it has an estimate of £3,000-£4,000.
The final section of The Summer Sale is furniture and rugs, with a substantial number
of lots on offer, including a fine Victorian burr walnut and marquetry circular
centre table (FS54/2231). Dating from circa 1865, this stunning piece of craftsmanship
is estimated at £2,000-£3,000, whilst in the rugs section of the sale, a Najafabad
carpet (FS54/2321) with red field and central beige, powder blue and indigo geometric
flowerhead pole medallion carries a pre-sale estimate of £800-£1,000.
In addition to the three day Summer Sale, we are also selling the Robert Deeley
Collection of kitchenalia on Monday, 11th July 2022 and Tuesday, 12th July 2022.
